So it turns out the problem is that the Battery Sense wire (Red with Yellow Stripe) was not connected. If I connected this to the battery, the CAN communications work. I didn't have it ...
I've done some more testing. I've reset the WS-500 to factory defaults where it is set to a simple starter battery and no BMS. It still reports the same error " BMS connection via CAN"....
