SW updates for a 9M managing 2 x Q-BMS house batt system on my sailboat?

  • Hello all,

Any news on a SW update for the Q-BMS devices? I have a 9M managing two Q-BMS 4P8S house batteries. I also have a single Q-BMS for my propulsion engine start battery.

I am getting ready for some long 1000nm+ cruises in approximatley 30 days and am hoping that some of the sw changes and updates for the 2Q will make it into my Q-BMS system.

Any word on when to expect a SW update or if one is planned? I'd love to see more data such as when the cells are balancing on the wifi module.

Also, while I have a spare ABMS device for my main Onan generator, I do not have spares for my 3 x Q-BMS. I spent a lot of time an money getting the Q-BMS powered system installed and tuned.

I'm not sure what do to about stocking spares for my trip. I have not looked into stocking 3 x 2Qs as spares nor what would be involved to retrofit should the Q-BMS quit when I'm visting some remote island in the South Pacific.

    Looking for some practical advice.

    Thanks in advance!

    Bill

  • Hey Bill,

If your serial# on your Q BMS is 4000+ it has the additional memory and can be upgraded to 2.9x.  We just need the serial#

For your Master/Slave, it too can be upgraded but we will need the serial #s of Master and slaves to confirm what updates are available.

For swapping out the Q to 2Q there are a couple of items to consider

    1) The 2Q uses a better connector system and your existing wires would need to be crimped and inserted in the connector.  We sell a full kit here:

    https://ogm-energy.com/products/rec-2q-cell-tap-connector-kit

    2)  The precharge circuit is now built into the BMS so it can be bypassed when upgrading

    3)  The new 2Q includes several upgrades and more closely integrates with Victron.  Here is a QuickStart manual showing how to set it up.

REC 2Q BMS to Victron Quickstart Manual

    4)  We had a bunch of 1Q in stock for spares but over the past 2 years these have sold out.  We do have a couple of returns that REC may be able to repair in a worst case scenario

    5)  Wifi and 2Q updates are in the works that include balancing display on the Wifi, but we havent tested them here yet.

Happy sailing in the South Pacific!!

  • Hi Rick,

Thanks so much for your quick response! I thought I’d post this in the forum here, just in case others have similar questions.

I’ll definitely take a look at the documents you’ve linked to and send the serial numbers over later today for the firmware update.

I’m thinking of upgrading the firmware, keeping the REC-Q units we have, but maybe getting a 9M new 2Qs as spares.

I know they won’t be hot-swappable, but having spares on board even if I have to spend some time re-wiring would save me time and hassle if I ever need to replace the Q units. Another question. I have not checked but are the 2Q units physically the same size?

Sailing around the world is often described as “boat repairs made in exotic locations.”

(Just curious, are the current 1Q units still repairable?)

  • @Rick Admin ,

As I am considering my options and reviewing the 2Q details, I also need to ensure that they are compatiable with my WakeSpeed WS-500 regulators and will work seemlessly with the Cerbo GX (running the latest sw) and with my Victron, MPPT and Multiplus IIs devices.

I get the sense that the WS-500 firware and Cerbo GX firmware compatibility is potentially getting better for DVCC support, but I am being more cautious with sw upgrades as I get ready to set saill...

Has anyone else gone through the upgrade path in addition to taming sw versions from multiple devices?
