Alternator Failed offshore

  • Hi - I have a ws500 setup with a balmar 6series that has been functioning well for about 30 operating hours so far.  Today, at startup the system ran normally for 4 minutes and then shutdown totally. No flashing indicator on the wakespeed, no output from the alternator. My Victron cerbo says the unit is "disconnected" as it would when  it is off.

    I can monitor the wakespeed with the app, and captured this log

    The app shows the alternator is in standby but not why. I see the -99 in the AST sentence.  Has my temp probe failed? Would that account for these symptoms?

    This is an awkward situation as I'm cruising offshore and would really like to have a working alternator.

  • We include a PC config tool with the WS500 and the PRO version allows you to import the raw data and re-run it on a chart or export it to excel in something a little more readable so I ran your numbers and have included an excel file that may help.

    I saw that your alt temp was a 40C, your RPMS was about 2,200 and it is was in ALTSTATE 31, which is forced float.  Hope that helps.

    @Rick Admin

  • @Rick Thank you Rick. I assumed the forced float status is because the feature in connector is configured as a bms charge enable lead which made me think that part of the setup is working correctly.

  • That leads me to think that your BMS has a pack high temp, cell high voltage or cell out of balance error that needs to be investigated

  • @Rick nope, turned out to be just a simple power input issue! Thats why it was off. All better now.
