P VAN Opt-2 Harness

  • I recently had a second alternator installed at the manufacturer.  But this was not thier normal install since it had not been done on my slightly older 2021 Mercedes Sprinter RV.

After recieving the van back the second alternator didn't seem to be charging the system.  Ultimately sent some logfiles to Wakespeed and they created a custom firmware.  The alternator seems to charge the system initially but 4 hrs into the trip it stopped.  The WS500 actaully just quit flashing all together.  I connected my Android and did a factory reset and got charging again.  Ran some tests and charging stopped again!! But weirdly enough would charge if I had the cable connected to run a logfile.

I sent the files to Wakespeed and they said it appeared that it was wired incorrectly.

Based on this photo it appears that my installer brought the larger gauge black wire and the darker out to my alternator.  In the attached link the longer 20ft cable (which appears to be the black and blue ) states that it is for the battery bank.

Does anyone have any experience with a harness labelled "P Van Opt-2"?  And how it is supposed to be wired??

  • @John Can you post the picture that you talk about.

There are different cable harnesen, in lenght and different connectors for different purpose.

But color code from the cable have all the same function.

  • I didnt have installed this cable myself

But blue is field wire, and is normally connected to the alternator. Is the blue connected at alternator?

Maybe someone else on the forum have seen or worked with this cable.

  • Yes the blue is conneccted to a connector post on my Nations alternator (in the photo it has apparently been spliced into a green wire which connects to the post on the alternator).  The larger gauge black wire (has green shrink wrap in the photo) is apparently the temp sensor at the alternator.
I assume there is no stator wire ?? (not even sure where it would connect on this alternator).

Any idea what the Brown wire (it comes out of the other group of uncovered wires with a black and red wire) is supposed to be for??

I did talk to the guys at Wakespeed but they had very little familiarity with this harness.

  • I was focused on your question about the wiring harness.
But assume that that all is correct.

Problem you have, stopped after 4 hours.

Charging can stop when batteries are full.
But the LED on the unit will still be working.

You notice that the LED dont work.
This means there is NO power on the brown wire anymore.
Best to check when the regulator stopped charging or there is power on the brown.
If there is NO power on the brown, this has nothing to do with the regulator, because the brown wire needs to get a voltage from somewhere else in your van.
You need to troubleshoot why there is NO voltage feed to the brown wire.

When the regulator is connected by USB, it is normal that the regulator start working.
(Regulator start working by usb power OR brown wire.)
