12v and 24v system

  • I have a Volvo Penta D2-75 12v engine driving a 24v Prestolite alternator.  I have a couple of questions.
    1.  Can the WS500 be fed 12v to power it and the regulate 24v or do I need to make up a relay to switch 24 volts to it?
    2. The D2-75 is computer controlled, the only switched 12v source I can find is on the back of the voltmeter but the wires are pretty skinny so question is how much power does the unit coupled with the white accessory function (which will be for battery equalisation as I have deep cycle FLA batteries)?
    Any wisdom much appreciated. Jamieson

  • Good questions. The WS500  ignition and feature-in wires can use any 8.5-48v source, as long as your overall system has a common ground for both 12 and 24v battery systems(which it should). The WS500 uses the alternator positive #6 red wire connection to power the field so no significant power actually flows through your #1 brown ignition wire
